Meanwhile, in the waiting room
British Shorthair Tom is prepared for his appointment with veterinarian Sara Galac. Today his blood values are getting measured and will show whether his thyroid still functions well.
鈥淚n 2018 Tom had started to vomit regularly, sometimes with little bits of blood鈥, Tom鈥檚 owner Hanneke says. 鈥淗is stomach and kidneys were examined, but they appeared clean. It seemed like Tom had hyperthyroidism; his thyroid was overproducing hormones.鈥
At first glance a thyroid issue appeared unlikely. 鈥淐ats with thyroid problems often lose weight, but Tom remained a true Garfield鈥, Hanneke said.
At the time she lived in England where the veterinarian prescribed medication to slow the thyroid down. 鈥淚t helped for 6 years but didn鈥檛 fix the problem. Tom started losing weight, so when I returned to the Netherlands, I went to the Academic Veterinary Hospital in Utrecht. A scan showed that Tom had a large thyroid tumor and required surgery.鈥
鈥淭om felt at ease in the Department of Clinical Sciences. He鈥檚 relaxed in the separate cat鈥檚 waiting room and is even going through the thyroid scan without sedation. The veterinarians are taking their time thoroughly examining everything. I鈥檓 extremely grateful to them.鈥
Tom鈥檚 thyroid tumor was removed in January. 鈥淗e鈥檚 recovering well and has a lot more energy. If today his blood values show an overactive thyroid again, they will treat him with radioactive iodine in the Department of Clinical Sciences.鈥
鈥淭om is my pillar of strength. He is very intuitive whenever I鈥檓 having a bad day and turns my house into a home. We鈥檝e been through a lot together. I hope we鈥檒l have a beautiful journey ahead of us.鈥
