Mathijs - Track: Governance & Societal Transformation
I do not want to solve problems, I want to prevent them.
During my high school years I reflected a lot about what my goals and wishes were for the future. It took me a while to figure out what I really wanted to do. At one point I was torn between studying medicine and Global Sustainability Science. But one night the solution appeared right in front of me: I do not want to solve problems, I want to prevent them. It was not difficult anymore once I had that realisation. Global Sustainability Science is aimed toward sustainability; it is something meant for future generations of humanity, but requires us to invest in that future.
This future-oriented perspective was not the only thing that drew me towards Global Sustainability Science. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been interested in a lot of topics. This broad interest gets satisfied by the multidisciplinary approach of our study. Being able to combine elements of social sciences with exact sciences, and applying that theory to brainstorm about ideas that might save our planet is amazing. Studying something that fits me that well in a city like Utrecht where parties are abound is everything that I wished for when choosing my study.
